New Managerial Philosophy: What It Is And How It Works

The spread of intelligent working has led to the development of a new managerial philosophy and the birth of a new professional figure: let’s find out which

Digital has radically changed how managers, professionals, and employees approach work. Especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, which highlighted the difficulty of making travel and has long prevented collaboration in the same environments and physical proximity, smart working has spread. With the discovery of new ways, a new managerial philosophy has developed.

Changes in the way of working lead to changes in lifestyles and in people’s daily lives. The work-life balance, the balance between professional and private life, is redefined and takes on new contours.

This is granted by the new technologies, which have forcefully entered the world of training and work. Digitization guarantees the possibility of being able to collaborate remotely, to be able to take advantage of essential resources and reap undeniable advantages.

The Advantages Of The New Managerial Philosophy

Adapting to smart working for many companies was not easy. Lacking the right tools and culture, many managers have been unable to guide their employees correctly or provide the most appropriate solutions.

There were communication problems due to distance and lack of a good internet connection. In many remote meetings, the visual element was missing, essential for interacting with collaborators, capturing their moods, and avoiding misunderstandings.

The work-life balance has often been compromised. Away from the office, it becomes increasingly difficult to carve out moments of pause, manage one’s time, and disconnect at the correct times. These risks are seriously compromising the well-being of workers.

With smart working, relationships with colleagues can be put at risk. The absence of coffee breaks and moments of interaction significantly reduces human contact. This makes collaboration and the creation of an outstanding team spirit more challenging to increase productivity and foster innovative processes.

In the face of evident difficulties deriving from smart working, numerous advantages have been acknowledged and reaped. This way of working represented an essential input for significant changes and the development of a new managerial philosophy.

After some initial difficulties, a new reality is emerging with essential changes affecting the global vision of work. The Smart Working Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano defines this evolution as a new managerial philosophy that aims to increase the flexibility and autonomy of workers as regards tools, spaces, and times and to increase people’s well-being.

It is a mature and reasoned model of Smart Working, capable of increasing employee productivity and improving worker performance. An essential benefit for all companies, which are increasingly inclined to apply it.

For professionals, there is greater flexibility and greater autonomy. The focus is always on the result: workers can choose, at their discretion, the spaces to be used, the tools, and work schedules as long as they can complete their tasks in the best possible way and within the pre-established times.

There is the involvement of all the figures who are called to intervene in the projects right from the conception phase. This increases the sense of responsibility of each worker, who will be more stimulated and motivated.

With intelligent working, it is possible to obtain benefits from an ecological point of view. The fewer people move around the area to go to offices and workspaces; the less pollution will be produced. A single day of remote work per week can save up to 40 hours of travel and significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

A New Professional: Chief Philosophy Officer (CPO)

A paradigm shift is needed to achieve these results, and values such as culture, the environment, and education in innovative skills and digital skills are united. The most attentive companies have understood this well and have decided to introduce a new professional figure.

The company must not change but manage with the responsibility to seize all the opportunities that arise.

Google, Twitter, Facebook, Skype, and other Silicon Valley companies have decided to equip themselves with philosopher managers, employing a new figure called Chief Philosophy Officer (CPO). These professionals can have an overview, understand what is happening in the present, and do what is necessary to seize all future opportunities.

It is often an individual with a background in the humanities who asks questions and induces workers to ask themselves questions and find new solutions and develop problem-solving skills. This leads to an improvement in corporate strategic choices.

A Chief Philosophy Officer does not solve problems but identifies them and studies their causes and why. Thanks to a philosophical approach, human resources are induced to find, in complete autonomy, the best solutions. This strengthens each employee’s sense of belonging and responsibility.
